So I guess it's well-past time that I check in. I've been meaning to for a few days, but, well, things slip away from me sometimes.
In the last month or two I've written three stories that I'm very proud of--"Retirement," "My Brother's Ghost," and "Payday." I think all are good, better than most other stories I've written.
I've already sold "Payday." I sold it to A Thousand Faces, which is a magazine that only publishes superhero fiction. Everybody check it--you can buy a print copy for $9, or a pdf for about $4. I haven't bought one yet, but I intend too--it's such a cool premise. And I've been writing superhero fiction for over ten years. Most of it's not very good, but now I have a place to channel what I do write.
I think I've mentioned "Retirement" on here before. A fun story. Not sure where I might sell it, though.
"My Brother's Ghost" is the best of the three, and isn't horror or speculative fiction in any way as the other two are. I haven't submitted it yet--I'm waiting, giving it time to breathe, then I'll edit it again and see how I can improve it.
I guess I should mention that "Payday" is my first sale for fiction. I've sold three poems before, but never a story.
I'm down to the final three episodes of Battlestar Galactica Season 3. I don't have cable, so I watch most shows after the DVDs come out. This season has had its highs and lows, but has been pretty enjoyable overall.
I'm finally getting down to work on my friend's web design company. He's building the company's website now, and I'm working on some text for it. Hopefully this comes together soon and we can start making a little cash. It would be nice to actually make money from writing, you know, since I went to school for that and all.
I may be ridiculed and scorned for this, but I bought Scarlet Johannson's CD. And I like it. It's deep, moody music--but what else would you expect from an album of Tom Waits covers? I also have the CD by Vampire Weekend, which is okay, but not great. Mudcrutch--a Tom Petty band--is good, but it sounds an awful lot like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The first song, a kind of country, bluegrass tune, is my fave by far.
