Not much news on the writing front today. My back started aching so badly at work last night that I took the day off from my day job and have been lying in bed as much as the boys would let me today. I can move now, and sit in a chair, so that's a good thing.
I'm working on my Devil's Food short story, tentatively titled "Bad Day to Forget." However, one of my goals for 2009was to write a flash fiction story each month, which I have yet to do for January. I've got an idea cooking for a little tale involving a game of Texas Hold 'Em and a mysterious dealer. I'm thinking of calling it "The Burned Card."
The idea comes out of the book I'm reading right now--but only in that it involves poker. I'm reading Last Call by Tim Powers, and it's an amazing book. Guess that's why it won the World Fantasy Award. I'm not a fan of fantasy; however, this book takes place completely in our world, it just involves a certain amount of magic, interwoven brilliantly with science. I'm loving it.
So, I think I'll work on my poker flash story before I finish "Bad Day to Forget." The deadline for Devil's Food isn't until April 1 anyway, I believe, so I've got a little time. Maybe that one can be my February short story.

Back problems suck. Hope you get to feeling better soon. good luck with your flash piece. (12 stories period is a lot in a year in my book.)
Thanks, Jamie. I actually just finished up the story--it was practically written in my head already--and I think it came out well. 12 stories is probably a lot, but I don't think I'll be writing any longer projects this year, so I want to focus on getting aas many stories as possbile written and out there.
I just wrote another flash piece since I wrote on your blog. I hope it doesn't suck. My flash gene must be working well right now, 2 in 2 days. have a great weekend.
Flash away! They tend to flow in bunches.
Way to go, Jamie. I think Aaron's right--I'm feeling the urge for another myself.
I hope the back feels better soon. Last year I had major problems with my sciatic nerve, though in the long run it actually helped convince my employer to transfer me to a different department...that paid better. So things worked out.
Sorry about your back. Too much piggy backing? What a great dad you are :) I went to Las Vegas last Spring. Dealers are amazing creatures. They manipulate the cards so gracefully, pay out chips so quickly--great inspirations. Good luck with it.
Jameson, I wish I could get such good fortune outof my back oroblems. Nothing yet, though.
Rebecca, maybe that is what it's from. I assumed it was all the heavy boxes I lift all night long at work. Silly me ;) I can't wait to go to Vegas someday. I think I would get a little addicted to it though. I'll have to wait until I'm a ridiculously wealthy writer.
